Improve the use of English in Tourism Organizations (TourENG)

Funding information

Project duration: 04/2018 – 01/2020

Project code number: 2017-1-TR01-KA202-045781

Funding guideline: Erasmus+ KA 2

Project concept

Initial situation

Employees in the tourism industry increasingly need better knowledge of English due to internationalisation. However, few employees, especially older ones, have sufficient English skills and access to language learning remains limited for them.

Target groups and their benefits

The aim of the TourEng project is to empower employees in the tourism sector without sufficient English skills for international communication, to strengthen their media skills and thereby their employability. In particular, employees with a low level of formal learning are targeted, who have limited opportunities to participate in formal language courses and are not used to using written self-learning material. For this reason, companies in the tourism sector, such as hotels, restaurants, travel agencies, should be sensitised and improve their training methods with regard to language acquisition. Support is provided by experts from tourism and further education who contribute their advisory skills in the use and production of digital learning media.

Project goal

The TourEng project develops learning material that enables employees in tourism to master the most important communication situations in English at a sufficient basic level. The project uses the tried and tested video-based approach, films scenes from real everyday working life and integrates learning units for language acquisition (e.g. vocabulary exercises, idioms, learning games, tests). This enables employees to understand the situations in English and to react appropriately. Through the independent production of learning videos, they learn self-organisation and media skills.
